I would like to spend a little time today offering some suggestions on how to live a healthy lifestyle.

Please keep in mind that I am 56 years old, and the information I am going to share with you today is based on my life experience, up to and including today.

If you are in your 20s and 30s, then some of the information will still be relevant, but remembers that I am in my 50s, so the information will be geared to that age group.

Also, I will include some tips and tricks for those just starting to get back into shape, but also for those who are well on the road to a healthy lifestyle.

Food and Weight Loss

There are a couple of things that I would like to mention here.

The first is diet versus lifestyle.

If you need to lose weight, you have a couple of choices. First choice is going on a diet. I can almost guarantee that you will lose weight if you go on a diet. A diet will limit your food intake in one or more category, and your body will compensate for the lack of nutrients in one or more category and you will lose weight. You may lose water weight, muscle mass, or ideally, you will lose fat.

Diets will work for weight loss. The issue is that when you go off the diet, and reintroduce all the same foods back into your eating pattern that were there before, guess what? All those foods put weight on your frame in the first place, so they will do it again.

The second and better choice to lose weight, is to change your eating habits and create a new lifestyle.

A word from my experience. The foods that you choose to eat have to taste good or you won’t eat them. A few years ago, after a trip to Europe and the subsequent looking at all the photos, my wife and I decided that it was time to get back into shape.

We both did research, and then had a discussion of what we were going to change in our eating habits to reach our goals.

We decided that we would start our journey to fitness with the Keto Lifestyle. We also decided that due to our ages, that weight lifting would be our exercise of choice. More about that below.

So, we started Keto and we both lost a lot of weight. I lost about 20 pounds and my wife lost about 25 pounds. We are feeling great. But we decided that a super strict Keto Lifestyle would not be sustainable in the long run. The food was tasty and great, but we were missing fruits and vegetables which we eliminated due to their high carb content.

So we made some changes and added in a few different foods, one or two at a time, to ensure that we were going to maintain our ideal weights. Most recently, we have changed to vegetarian, which we are enjoying a lot.

I believe that the key to a healthy lifestyle is to eat as much raw food as possible. This is the type of food that your body can process the easiest. If you decide to have other foods in your lifestyle, then choose meats that are grass fed and finished and free-range raised. Also, choose food that has traveled the least distance from growth source to your table.

The second thing I need to mention here is sugar. You need to eliminate as much sugar as you possibly can from your eatingno sugar lifestyle if you want to lose weight and keep it off.

I will be dedicating an article to sugar in the near future, so stay tuned, but just take me at my word for now: you must eliminate sugar from your daily consumption. It is not good for you, at all.

Exercise and Weight Loss

This is the next most important part of a healthy lifestyle. Eating properly will be the beginning of your health improvement, but exercise will take your health to the next level.

Once again, my wife and I did our own research and then we had a discussion. As I mentioned above, we decided to start lifting weights. At our age, Aerobic exercise is not the best way to get and stay healthy. Our bodies would not respond as well to aerobics as it would to resistance training, is what we discovered in our research. So weight lifting is was. We had some weights at home, but not many.

Our next discussion was whether we were going to join a gym or work out at home. We discussed our lifestyles, including work schedules and when we wanted to exercise, and we decided that we would expand our at home gym with the equipment we needed to meet our needs.

The next task was to research and decide on the program that we would embark upon. We decided on a beginners weight lifting program, and as we became more comfortable with the exercises, our weight lifting program changed.

We work out in the morning, before work, and at this point have switched from individual body part workouts to a full body workout.

The important thing to remember here is to choose an activity that you will stick with as a lifestyle change.

The Kitchen

Your kitchen, and everything in it, will become the most important part of your new lifestyle.

The first step will be to purge your kitchen of all the foods and condiments that should not be there. And by purge, I don’t mean eat! Throw it out! Donate anything that is unopened to a food bank or local school. Just get rid of all the foods that you know are causing you to be unhealthy.

Next, dust off the food processor and the blender. These will become very important tools in your new eating habits.

Many recipes will ask you to use the blender or the food processor. Remember, you will be eating more raw foods and you will need to be preparing them properly.

Next, you will need to get the proper equipment for cooking and storing the food. good set of pots and pans is the first step. The next step is to have proper storage containers for the raw food and the leftovers of your cooking. Glass containers and plastic containers which do not contain BPAs are best. Also remember to not heat up leftovers in plastic containers. Always use microwave safe glass.

Just a quick word on snacks. If you are like me, and everyone else I know, you will want to snack at certain times throughout the day. Here is an article on some Keto friendly snacks, and another on nuts. Keep in mind that any fruits and vegetables are good snack foods, as is popcorn. Everything in moderation, is the key.

Also remembers that a handful of carrots will be better for you to snack on than a handful of berries or a banana, since there will be less fructose.

General Happiness

There are many ways to be happy. As with food and exercise, you will need to find your happy place. Mine is at home, with my wife and my dogs.happiness

I like to read, exercise, cook, clean the house, and cut the grass. I am retired and my wife is not, so I get to do a lot of the housework, both inside and outside the home, which I love to do. It makes me happy to have a clean house and dinner started when my wife gets home.

I love spending time with the dogs during the day. I love being outside.

All of these things make me happy.

You need to find the things that make you happy. It may involve a drastic life change. It may not. Perhaps you just need to golf twice a week instead of once. Talk it over with your life partner, and make the changes that will make everyone happy.

The key is to go to bed happy and wake up wanting to start the day because you are happy to be alive.
